Luuk became a member of De Meet at June 24, 2020. From this day on he has been very active within the association, both on and off the bike. Luuk has made extensive efforts for the association and accomplished great things. One such great thing is winning the NSK in Nederwetten (2021) in the elite category. But despite being an extraordinary rider himself, he also teaches and encourages our own members riding and racing. Without Luuk, the wonderful Monday trainings provided by himself would not have been the same! Behind the scenes, Luuk has also acted as treasurer of the 2020-2021 board and served two years in the cash control committee. Because of Luuk, De Meet is financially healthy and has a strong foundation due to his contributions.
Below we take a look at Luuk his cycling career, biggest wins and his future in the sport. All of this information and pictures were provided by Luuk his dad (Twan) in an interview with us.
Luuk started his cycling career in 2008 and soon discovered his talent and passion for the sport. Intensive training and dedication led to his first major win, De Omloop van Noord West Overijssel in 2016 where he beat current world tour sprinter Olav Kooij. Two years later in 2018 he was selected by the Dutch national team and rode in Luxembourg against Remco Evenepoel (see picture on the right). In 2019, Luuk managed to win the polka dot jersey in the five day stage race of Deux Severe in France. He also managed to finish in 5th place in GC while still being a first year U23 rider. In his cycling career, Luuk rode against many world tour riders, including Remco Evenepoel, Olav Kooij, Rick Pluimers, Casper van Uden, Maikel Zijlaard and Huub Artz.
At De Meet, Luuk discoverd his passion for giving training and coaching other cyclists. During his time at our association, he has put his focus more towards the lower categories of the sport instead of the absolute top. By giving training to beginners and more experienced cyclists, Luuk needs to be able to cope with all levels and handle tons of different situations. Currently, Luuk is following a course to be a certified trainer. This will provide him with more skills and the opportunity to further develop himself into a trainer or coach role. His father thinks he will be successfull in this role due to his experience in the highest levels of the sport.
On this note, we as the association want to again express our inmense gratitude for the extensive efforts and prestigious achievements Luuk has accomplished for De Meet. We also want to sincerely congratulate him with being the first member of honor of our beautiful association! We hope Luuk will continue to grow in the sport of cycling and we hope to see him many more times at our association!
